Pre-order 'What's in the Air?' - a graphic novel by Jude Montague

WHAT'S IN THE AIR?

A New Graphic Novel by Jude Montague

Set in the forgotten days of pioneer radio, as the BBC came into being in 1922.

Sydney Wright is a young 'cellist graduating from college. The story of how he became one of the first musicians on Manchester's '2ZY' and one of the very first generation of broadcasters on the BBC as 'Uncle Sydney' is told from the point of view of his romantic relationship with Marjorie Earnshaw from Haworth, the Bronte's home in Yorkshire, who imagines herself as a heroine in Wuthering Heights and who looks to her ancestors for guidance.

Messages from the beyond, the transforming world of electromagnetic waves and the little-sung role of Manchester and the North West of England in the history of music, technology and communication are all themes that run through this novel.

The plot is a rom com with Marjorie and Sydney based on the true story of the author's own grandparents who met at the early radio studio in Manchester.

Sat 4 May - Bossa Nova & Girls from Ipanema

Studies in bossa nova with tracks from Elis Regina, Tom Jobim, Elza Soares, Ry Cooder, Manuel Galbán, Nouvelle Vague and looking at the soundtrack and concept behind the Netflix series 'Girls from Ipanema' in which a wealthy young woman from São Paulo sets up a music club in Rio de Janeiro. The series reimagines the attitudes of women and the racism surrounding the origins of bossa nova and is a luxurious study of female friendship in urban beach life.
